Fani Nolimal, Nataša Potočnik, Barica Marentič Požarnik, Sonja Pečjak, Gašper Cankar: Empowering students by improving reading literacy and access to knowledge

Dec 2013 | School Field Seminar

We invite you to the December seminar of the School Field, which is part of the University of Ljubljana Week. This time we will listen to the presentation of the research results of the domestic research project Empowering Students by Improving Reading Literacy and Access to Knowledge. With us will be Dr. Fani Nolimal (Project Leader, National Institute of Education of the Republic of Slovenia), Dr. Nataša Potočnik (National Institute of Education of the Republic of Slovenia), Dr. Barica Marentič Požarnik (Faculty of Philosophy, University of Ljubljana), Dr. Sonja Pečjak (Faculty of Philosophy, University of Ljubljana) and Dr. Gašper Cankar (State Examination Center).

The project was carried out in the form of an action research, which included 42 primary schools from all over Slovenia. Of these, the majority of schools (38) were such that their achievements in the NPE in mathematics and the Slovenian language in the last five years were low (below the Slovenian average), and they also showed a deficit in students from an uninspiring socio-economic family environment. The goals of the project were to improve the reading literacy of students according to the criteria also used by international functional literacy surveys (PIRLS and PISA) and to improve achievements in the NPE.

We are convinced that this project opens up complex questions that we have already discussed in our seminars and that are of interest to a wide circle of professional audiences. As is customary at our seminar, the introductory part will be followed by a discussion in which you will be able to provide your comments and ask questions.

We would like to kindly invite you to join us on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 7:00 PM in room 026 at the Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana, Kardeljeva pl. 16, Ljubljana.
